Frequently Asked Questions

What is Carlisle Pride?

Carlisle Pride is the celebration of our LGBTQ+ community members.

Who organizes Carlisle Pride?

Carlisle Pride is organized by a group of individuals and organizations who are dedicated to making Carlisle an affirming, accepting, and safe place for all.

What is Pride in general?

As explained by the Library of Congress:

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as "Gay Pride Day," but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the "day" soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.

I’m a cis-gendered straight person. Can I come to Pride Events?

Yes! However, get prepped by reading articles about how to be an excellent ally to the LGBTQ+ community. Above all, remember, this is not your party. You're a guest and should behave as such.

What if I have a question about an event?

Please contact the organization, business, or person hosting the event.

Will I be filmed or photographed at Carlisle Pride Events?

Carlisle Pride Week Photography and Videography Policy:

When you enter a Carlisle Pride Week (CPW) event you enter an area where photography, audio, and video recording may occur.

CPW Pride volunteer photographers are in attendance on the event sites and attendees give permission for photographic material to be used for CPW Pride promotional purposes. There may also be representatives of the LGBT+ and mainstream media outlets in attendance documenting the events for editorial reporting purposes. If you do not wish your image to be captured by them please make it clear to them if you are approached.

Are children welcome at Pride events?

While some Pride events are obviously kid-friendly, others are not. We believe a child’s parent or guardian can best answer this question. Please read the description of events and feel free to ask the hosts follow-up questions. In the end, only you can decide how you would like your child to participate in Pride.

Parking and Pride

Parking for Pride events will be different for every event. Some spaces provide parking, while other’s event spaces may have limited parking. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Parking is free on the weekends

  • Parking is limited on certain streets, so, if possible, consider walking.

  • Please look ahead at event spaces to find out if parking is accessible and available.

  • Carpool when possible
